Ready for school, at home.

The months before school are a good time for small, steady habits at home. These notes are general ideas for Indian families, from the years before Pre-Nursery through Class 5.

Stage by stage

Small habits, big help.

General ideas for home. Every child moves at their own pace.

At home

Before Pre-Nursery and Nursery

  • Tell one short story in your own language at bedtime.
  • Count cups, spoons, or onions together while you cook.
  • Name colours as you sort clothes or vegetables.
  • Practise saying their full name when you greet neighbours.
  • Keep a simple order to the day: play, meal, wash, rest.
At home

LKG and UKG

  • Ask them to retell a story in their own words.
  • Draw lines, circles, and shapes with a thick crayon.
  • Count steps or market items on a short walk.
  • Let them open their tiffin and button a shirt alone.
  • Share one picture book and talk about the pictures.
At home

Class 1 to 5

  • Set one quiet corner for the bag, books, and homework.
  • Ask what happened at school, then listen before you advise.
  • Read one short paragraph aloud, slowly, a few evenings a week.
  • Write a three-item kitchen list and let them tick it.
  • Notice effort, neat work, and honesty, not only the right answer.
New to school?

Settling in during the first weeks

  • Visit once before April so the gate and play area feel familiar.
  • Pack the bag together the evening before, and name each thing.
  • Keep the goodbye short, warm, and the same each morning.
  • Talk about play, friends, and the day in a calm, ordinary way.
  • Tell us what your child enjoys, and ask how the first days go.

Safety & care

What to ask and see on your visit.

A visit shows the care a page cannot. Carry this list to any school, and ask Kiddies Campus the same things when you come to Hirapur.

1

Who collects your child

Ask who may take your child home, how the school checks that person, and what you should do if the plan changes.

2

Play area and equipment

Walk the open play area and the indoor play corner. Look at slides and other equipment, and ask how adults stay with the children.

3

Classrooms and toilets

Look at classroom floors, activity tables, and the toilets children use. Ask how often each is cleaned through the day.

4

A crying or new child

Children at this stage often need a gentle start. Ask how teachers sit with a child who is upset or new, and what helps in the first days.

5

First aid and illness

Ask what happens if a child is hurt or unwell, who is told at school, and when you would be called.

6

Who rides with the children

Transport is available. Ask who travels with the children, how a route is set, and how you hear about a delay.

7

News of your child's day

Ask how parents hear about the day — a short word at pickup, a note, or a call — and whom you should speak to.

8

Drinking water

Ask where children drink, how water is kept, and whether you may send a bottle from home.
